Powell Butte Nature Park: A Favorite Portland Photography Location
If you're looking for a beautiful place for family photos or senior portraits in Portland, Powell Butte Nature Park is one of my favorite locations—and one I find myself returning to again and again.
Located in Southeast Portland, Powell Butte is a little slice of nature right in the city. With more than 600 acres of meadows, forests, trails, and natural areas, there is plenty of room to explore without feeling like you're surrounded by the city. It's especially convenient for my East Portland clients (and for me!), because you can get beautiful Oregon scenery without having to drive hours outside of Portland.
And somehow, even though I photograph here often, it never gets old.
A Little Bit of Everything
What makes Powell Butte so great for photography is the combination of landscapes all in one place. There are wide-open fields, evergreen trees, shaded areas, wooded trails, and seasonal foliage, giving us plenty of options throughout a session.
That makes it especially great for family and senior portraits. We can get those beautiful close-up portraits among the trees, then move into the open spaces for walking and playful photos. Instead of spending an entire session in one little area, we can wander and let the location become part of the experience.
It's one of those places where I can photograph the same location multiple times and still come away with galleries that feel completely different.
Summer at Powell Butte
Summer is beautiful at Powell Butte, especially when the long grasses turn that gorgeous golden color. During golden hour, the sunlight catches the grass and creates the warmest, dreamiest glow—it's perfect for senior portraits and those cozy family photos where everyone can tuck into the grass together.
But the golden fields aren't the only reason I love summer here.
There are also plenty of green trees and shaded areas, which are perfect for when you want something cooler and a little more lush. The contrast between the warm golden fields and the deep greens of the trees gives us a lot to work with during one session.
Fall at Powell Butte
Fall might be one of my favorite times to photograph families here.
While Powell Butte has evergreen trees that stay beautiful year-round, there are also plenty of deciduous trees that put on a gorgeous show in the fall. The combination of colorful leaves, golden grasses, and soft autumn light makes it such a pretty setting for fall family photos in Portland.
And because there is so much space to explore, we don't have to limit ourselves to one little patch of fall color.
Why I Love It for Family & Senior Sessions
Powell Butte is one of my favorite locations when clients want photos that feel natural, playful, and varied.
For families, we can spend part of the session walking together, letting the kids run around, playing, laughing, and capturing those little in-between moments. Then we'll slow things down for some beautiful portraits of everyone together.
For seniors, there are endless opportunities to change up the feel of the session—from close-up portraits in the trees to full-body photos in the fields and more editorial images surrounded by the landscape.
I don't want your session to feel like you're standing in one spot and smiling at a camera for an hour. I want you to actually enjoy yourself, and Powell Butte gives us plenty of room to do that.
A Few Things to Know Before Your Session
Bring comfortable shoes! There is an uphill section at the beginning of the walk, and we'll be doing some walking throughout the session. It's not a difficult hike by any means, but it's enough to get your blood pumping. If you want to wear heels or dress shoes for your photos, I definitely recommend bringing a comfortable pair to wear between locations.
And if your dog is part of the family, you're welcome to bring them along! Powell Butte is dog-friendly, although dogs need to remain leashed and on designated trails.
A Portland Location I Never Get Tired Of
I think that's ultimately why Powell Butte remains one of my favorite photography locations in Portland. Every season brings something a little different, and every session feels different depending on the people I'm photographing.
You can have golden summer fields, lush green trees, colorful fall leaves, peaceful trails, or a beautiful mountain view—all without leaving Portland.
For my East Portland clients especially, it's hard to beat.
